Kawasaki has already announced some features of its 2 Ninja H2019 and, beyond the 231 hp, the new air filter, the revised computer and the new Brembo Stylema calipers, there is a “self-repairing” paint based on the following principle.

The Kawasaki's paintwork includes an additional layer that has microscopic segments that produce a spring-like effect that absorbs impact (when the spring contracts), before returning to their normal shape (when the spring relaxes).

This is called the “curling effect” which we can see on the right in the graphic below, in contrast to the layers used in traditional painting.

In the automotive sector, this type of “self-healing” paint has already been applied, but, based on chemical reactions, it can take weeks for the paint to return to its original state. According to the Kawasaki patent, in some cases only 10 to 20 minutes would be needed to repair small scratches, at ambient temperatures between 26º and 30º.

In addition to all this, it is also worth noting that under this "self-healing" layer there is a second, harder layer of protection to prevent some scratches that are too strong to be repaired by this innovative technology.

The formula therefore seems interesting for erasing micro scratches due to friction of your jacket on the tank, but do not believe that it will be capable of eliminating deep scratches such as, for example, those left deliberately by a malicious key, and even less those left unintentionally by a fall...
