When the world of the R series meets yours

The YZF-R1 forever changed the world of the supersport category in 1998, then Yamaha's R series gradually established itself as the benchmark range of high-performance sports cars.

Today, this family is carried by the flagship R1M, the most advanced production motorcycle ever manufactured by Yamaha. The R series includes other hypersport machines including the extraordinary R1 and R6 RACE and Yamaha offers a wide range of GYTR parts to achieve even higher levels of engine and chassis performance. But Yamaha is keen to offer more accessible models: this is the objective of the twin-cylinder R3 and single-cylinder R125 which allow new riders to learn about the R series on the circuit and on the road.

The nature of the supersport universe is changing and, while the most extreme models still attract a dedicated clientele of performance-hungry riders, Yamaha is looking to expand its range with the launch of the new R7. It will allow a new generation of drivers to discover the R series, especially as it will be available in “maximum power” and 35 kW versions for A2 license holders.

Yamaha R7: Honoring the legend

No motorcycle would dare compare to the original YZF-R7. Only 500 of these factory motorcycles were produced in 1999 in order to be approved to compete in the World Superbike Championship and the Suzuka 8 Hours. Riden by legendary champions, such as Noriyuki Haga and Akira Yanagawa, the YZF-R7 is still considered one of the most exotic and desirable Japanese motorcycles ever built.

The new R7 has been named in respect of the original YZF-R7 superbike. Proudly bearing this illustrious name, the 7 R2021 represents a new type of supersport motorcycle, created to appeal to a younger audience and designed to introduce them to the sensations, pleasure and pride of owning a Yamaha R series.

New Yamaha R7: The R series changes dimensions

Although the legendary R1M, R1 and R6 RACE will always have their place in our range, the arrival of the new R7 makes the R series more accessible to many drivers. Anyone who dreams of adopting a Supersport lifestyle.

Powered by a highly regarded Yamaha CP2 engine, famous for its powerful, linear torque, reliability and low maintenance costs, the new R7 is set to shake up the mid-size market. Clad in carefully designed bodywork and extremely high specification, including radial-mount front brakes, inverted forks and A&S clutch, the R7 is a new type of sports car that delivers exhilarating performance, exceptional handling and the aggressive styling of the R series at a very competitive price.

Light, compact and agile, this exceptionally stylish machine gives its rider maximum control for intense and permanent pleasure, whether on the circuit or in town. This supersport is truly within reach of any driver wishing to be part of the R series universe. The R7 corresponds to a new reality: available in “full power” and 35 kW versions, it is ready to attract a new audience and to have a significant impact on the world of its category.

2 cm³ CP689 engine: Sporty performance and daily pleasure

Pure driving pleasure, accessibility and affordable price characterize the new R7: enough to give an exciting new dimension to the R series supersport range. Considered one of the most exciting models in its category, the Yamaha engine CP2 689 cm³ corresponds perfectly to this new model.

Featuring a 270-degree crankshaft that provides an asynchronous firing sequence, the CP2 in-line twin-cylinder, four-stroke, four-valve, liquid-cooled engine produces assertive, linear torque in its rev changes. Maximum power of 73,4 hp (54 kW) is produced at 8 rpm. Maximum torque of 750 Nm is reached at 67 rpm, giving the R6 very strong acceleration, even from a standing start. Furthermore, the asynchronous ignition sequence which drives the crankshaft positioned at 500 degrees creates a real sensation of power increase which follows the engine speed curve.

Changes to the existing CP2 engine include a new ECU specification and optimized air intake ducts, as well as an original exhaust design and adapted fuel injection parameters. These transformations improve control and provide a linear and rapid response to acceleration, contributing to an intense driving experience. Fully compliant with the EU5 standard, this R7 engine has a very pleasing trunk. In addition to these specific modifications, the R7 features a slightly reduced secondary gear ratio to provide a sportier character and stronger acceleration.

Assisted anti-dribble clutch (A&S): Optimal control

A key new feature of the R2's CP7 engine is the adoption of an Assisted Slipper Clutch (A&S) which provides smoother shifting, prevents engine over-revving and rear wheel locking during hard braking, with The result is more predictable and controllable handling when approaching corners.

Another advantage of the R7's A&S clutch: It offers a significant soft feel at the lever, approximately 33% greater than a standard clutch.

Optional Quick Shifter: Smooth gear changes for competitive acceleration

R7 riders can choose to have their new supersport equipped with a Quick Shift System (QSS) available as an option from their Yamaha dealer. The QSS system, both simple and effective, is equipped with a sensor positioned on the gear selector. When upshifting, the ECU instantly cuts power to the transmission for a few milliseconds, allowing faster and smoother full-throttle gear changes for even more exhilarating acceleration.

Slender, lightweight frame: Ultra-responsive handling and great agility in corners

Thinness and compactness are two of the main characteristics of the R7. This new supersport uses a lightweight tubular frame, designed to provide responsive, agile handling and quick changes of direction.

A rigid aluminum central reinforcement helps improve the handling of the motorcycle on the track and on the road. The high-strength steel frame uses different tube sections at key locations to achieve an ideal stiffness balance.

Fully adjustable 41mm inverted fork: Easy to adjust for track or road use

All attention has been paid to the design of the new suspensions of the R7, in order to obtain a feeling of precision at the front when cornering and when braking. The new 41mm KYB inverted fork offers a high level of stability as well as good handling on circuits and winding roads. And to guarantee a feeling of stability at the front, nothing better than a cast upper triple clamp and a forged aluminum lower triple clamp.

The R7 can be configured by the rider to adapt to different conditions. This fork is fully adjustable for preload, as well as compression and rebound. With the compression adjustment located in the left fork leg and the rebound adjustment on the right leg, adjustments are quick and easy to make.

For precise handling and feedback, the R7's premium inverted fork combines with a 23,7-degree trail angle and 90 mm trail. The compact wheelbase of 1 mm and the weight distribution on the front/rear wheels of 395/51 allow this new Supersport to be hyper quick when changing angles.

New Monocross type rear suspension with links

The R7 adopts a redesigned Monocross link-type rear suspension system, with damping and spring rate characteristics tailored to its sporty character. Positioned horizontally, the shock absorber contributes to better mass centralization, thus improving handling. It is easily adjustable for preload and rebound, allowing the R7 chassis to be quickly configured for use on the track or on the road.

Supersport riding position: Half handlebars, rear controls and single seat

The R7's sporty driving position is the result of many hours of testing by factory drivers. The use of adjustable elements proves the true sporting DNA of the motorcycle. The configuration of the handlebars/saddle/footrests triangle was chosen after experimenting with numerous possibilities. It offers the best possible driving position, sporty and versatile, with great freedom in moving your body to adapt to different driving situations, particularly on circuits and winding roads.

An important feature is the design of the saddle, narrow at the thighs and wider at the rear, to provide maximum ease of movement. The opening angle of the handlebars and the positioning of the rear controls have been carefully determined to obtain a driving position as close as possible to the chassis, both for perfect control and for optimal aerodynamic efficiency. The ability to become one with the machine is reinforced by the indented tank cover. The knee spaces also allow the rider to hold the motorcycle during braking and cornering.

The single-seater saddle has a backrest, and it is complemented by a passenger saddle. A seat shell is available as an option in the range of genuine Yamaha accessories. It can be easily mounted on the R7 for riders who only ride solo.

Radial-mount calipers and radial master cylinder: High performance for fingertip control

The R7's premium front braking system, a worthy heir to the original R series and featuring 4-piston radial-mount brake calipers, delivers precise, consistent stopping power for exceptional control. This advanced front braking system also includes a Brembo radial master cylinder that provides linear brake pressure for greater control.

Ultra-sporty dimensions: The quest for perfect control

What makes the R7 such an attractive supersport for a wide range of customers is its design designed to allow its rider to achieve a high level of control in many situations. The driver of the R7 must really have the feeling of being one with his machine. Thanks to its compact and sporty lines, it is the rider who controls the machine, and not the other way around.

Weighing only 188 kg fully loaded, and compact proportions, the Yamaha is very accessible. In addition to better mass centralization, a small frontal area and a low moment of inertia, the compactness gives the R7 driver a feeling of total control which contributes to a higher level of driving and confidence, while boosting the pleasure of driving on circuits, on weekend rides or on daily commutes.

Ultra-thin R-Series bodywork: Reduced air resistance for optimal performance

The key to powering a supersport as efficiently as possible is keeping the frontal area as small as possible, and that's where the R7 has a distinct advantage. The CP2 engine is one of the narrowest in the 700 cm³ category and the minimalist tubular chassis maintains this compact size. These elements allowed Yamaha to create the thinnest R series yet, even narrower than the R3 and R125 models, making the R7 one of the most aerodynamically efficient motorcycles.

The incredibly small frontal area not only makes the R7 one of the most exceptional supersport models, but it also pays off in terms of performance. With the same maximum power as other Yamaha models equipped with CP2, the new R7 is capable of reaching a significantly higher top speed thanks to its aerodynamics.

Front of the evolved R series: Still as pure and aggressive

With its aggressive dual-lens look and YZR-M1 MotoGP™-style M-shaped air intake, the R7 is undeniably a recognizable member of the R range. Visible on the R7, this front end represents the future of the R series. It consists of a single LED headlight recessed into the iconic M-shaped air duct, while LED position lights create a certain similarity to the human gaze – the motorcycle sports a new air deflector air located at the base of the intake.

Redesigned fully LCD dashboard

The compact cockpit features a redesigned white-on-black, high-contrast LCD instrument panel that provides clear, easy-to-read information, allowing the R7 driver to concentrate on the road. Features include a gear engaged indicator, shift indicator light and QSS indicator when this optional feature is used.

Lightweight 10-spoke alloy wheels

For easy handling and responsive suspension, the R7 is equipped with lightweight 10-spoke cast alloy wheels. A 120/70ZR17 tire at the front and a wide 180/55ZR17 tire at the rear provide astonishing traction and excellent handling when cornering, accelerating and braking.
