The latest Road Safety report is encouraging. In mainland France, 203 people were killed on the roads in April 2021, down 14% compared to April 2019, according to Road Safety figures published Thursday May 20. The National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory compared the figures to those of April 2019 and not 2020, historically low due to national confinement.

Thus, compared to April 2019, 32 fewer deaths were recorded by the authorities. “The reduction in travel (curfew and 10 km limit) and home-work journeys (teleworking) explain the improvement in road accidents in April 2021 compared to previous Aprils, excluding 2020”, explains Road Safety.

Among the 203 people who died in April, there were 95 motorists, 20 pedestrians, 53 motorcyclists and 19 cyclists. Mortality has decreased, compared to 2019, for all categories of users. On the other hand, studied by age group, the mortality of minors doubled between the two periods (16 killed in April 2021), that of 18-24 year olds decreased (33 killed) and a decrease is also noted, but lighter , for people aged 65 and over with 50 deaths compared to 52 in April 2019.
