Announced since 2016 and in testing since July 2021, around a hundred urban radars have been deployed in the urban areas of Marseille, Toulouse, Montpellier and Belfort.

Two models have been designed and approved to carry out speed control, control of crossing the red light and the use of the mobile phone, and they are generally found at height near the lights to be controlled, after having been signaled by a small panel located at least 20 meters from the control device.

In the northern half of France, the Nomad model developed by the company Parifex is and will be installed, controlling using a set of scanning lasers which model space in three dimensions.
In the southern half of France, we find the Mesta Compact model from the company Idemia, which works with a new generation multi-target Doppler tracker radar antenna.

By the end of March 2023, a first tranche of functional radars was to be deployed throughout France, according to comments made at the beginning of January in an interview with Le Parisien by the interministerial delegate for road safety, Florence Guillaume, with the eventual commissioning of 300 urban radars by the end of the year.

According to information from France Info published yesterday, the Interior Ministry reportedly stated that “ no date is stopped.” The government would thus claim to have decided to “ extend the test phase to be certain of the proper functioning of the devices”.

A technical or political hiccup which postpones, in any case, the commissioning of these urban radars.
