Created in 2008, the Spirit of Speed collectors club has since firmly established itself in the world of vintage racing motorcycles and has become recognized by the FIM. Interview with Bernard Girardot-Miglierina, president of the association, before the big meeting of the Sunday Ride Classic June 11-12 on the Paul Ricard circuit.

« In total, there are around 5 motorcycles if we take into account all the members. » From the start, the stage is set. Building on a successful first exhibition in 2009, a few months after the launch, Spirit of Speed has built a giant reputation in just a few years, and regularly presents exceptional platforms in demonstration at various events. “ These are competition motorcycles, all categories combined. We have MotoGP, 500cc, endurance and Superbike machines, as well as survivors of disappeared disciplines like 50cc or 80cc! », Specifies Bernard Girardot-Miglierina. “ In 2016, we implemented internally a classification of members' machines to be perfectly clear and honest with spectators but also with organizers and among us collectors. »

We have created four distinct categories, so that there is no misunderstanding about the historical relevance of each model. First of all, the “Historicals”. These are the most exceptional racing two-wheelers you will ever see. “ “Historical” motorcycles are motorcycles for which we have reliable, official traceability. They are strictly in conformity with their period version and have documents to prove it he continues.

Next come the “originals”, official or private, but for which proof of authenticity is lacking. Then, the “replicas”, but not in the sense that one might understand. “ We do not accept false replicas, only replicas stricto sensu, i.e. reproduced 100% identically. » Finally, the “evocations”, a category which brings together often redecorated production motorcycles.

The international technical commission, headed by Julien Charnolé, is made up of experts, most of them mechanics, journalists, team directors, collectors, journalists or drivers. To avoid any conflict of interest, professionals in the restoration or sale of motorcycles are not admitted. Faced with the seriousness and the work of the association, Jorge Viegas, president of the FIM, could only approve. “ We were invited to the headquarters, and Mr. Viegas asked us if we wanted to be associated with a new project, The Legacy Program. It was magnificent, a great recognition of our thinking and our work. Today, we are their partners and our classification becomes a real certification supported by the FIM and open to all collectors in the world! » specifies Bernard Girardot-Miglierina.

A series of European “FIM historic events” (with the aim of becoming global) has been set up: this is the case of the Sunday Ride Classic. “ These FIM historic events, an idea of President Viegas, are in place to support our classification. The events must feature a series of parades in which the motorcycles presented are all authenticated by the commission. A protected digital certificate and laser-engraved identification plate are assigned, which follow the motorcycle regardless of ownership. »

For the SRC 2022, the president of the association promises a beautiful field of around fifty motorcycles, all eras combined, up to the most modern. Don't miss this opportunity! “FIM historic events” are rare so we expect many of you at the Sunday Ride Classic 2022, on June 11 and 12 at Paul Ricard!
