Second in the inaugural race of the Supersport World Championship at Phillip Island, Lucas Mahias qualified in fifth position on the MotorLand circuit, while Jules Cluzel, neglected by luck since the start of the year, was forced to start from thirteenth place on the grid (fifth row) without his speed being in question.

The disadvantage for Jules was that he had to come up quite quickly at the start of the race, it being only 16 laps long (81,232 km) and the men on the first row PJ Jacobsen et Kenan Sofuoglu not intending to hang around on the way.

Sheridan Morais started in front Lucas Mahias while Robin Mulhauser fell without gravity. At the end of the first lap, Morais, Smith and Mahias preceded Sofuoglu while Cluzel was eighth. Zaccone parked his broken down official MV against the wall at the edge of the circuit.

A group of 9 drivers formed at the front with Smith, Morais, Mahias, Tuuli, Jacobsen, Sofuoglu, Gamarino, Caricasulo and Cluzel. The young Niki Tuuli (second in the Championship) fell without seriousness. His Kallio Racing teammate Sheridan Morais briefly took the lead, before Lucas Mahias took command. Kyle Smith then second fell without gravity.

At the halfway mark, Mahias led in front Load it which fell heavily in front Sofuoglu who also fell (Sofuoglu suffered from multiple bruises and Caricasulo from shoulder bruises). Morais took the lead ahead of Mahias, Jacobsen, Cluzel and Gamarino. Mahias was virtually leading the World Championship!

With 7 laps remaining, Morais (Yamaha Kallio), Mahias (official Yamaha) and Jacobsen (official MV Agusta) were fighting for first position, while 2.1 further Cluzel (CIA Landlord Insurance Honda) preceded Gamarino (Bardahl Evan Bos. Honda Racing), Canducci (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing Junior Team FMI) and Rolfo (MV Agusta Team Factory Vamag).

The two R6s of Morais and Mahias slightly distanced Jacobsen's MV two laps from the checkered flag. In the last lap, Mahias took the lead and won his first world victory and moved into the lead of the World Championship! Jules Cluzel ranked in an excellent fourth position.

Lucas Mahias:

“The fight was great, with a lot of fighting from start to finish, just the way I like it. The weekend started badly because I wasn't able to qualify directly for Superpole 2, but it ended magnificently. It's very good for Yamaha, my teammate won in Thailand and me today, this bike is fantastic. »
