While Suzuki decided to run Andrea Iannone during the two days of testing, the other GSX-RR was entrusted to Sylvain Guintoli on the first day and Alex Rins on the second. Iannone did very well on the first day with the best time ahead of Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo, while Sylvain preceded in eleventh position Eugene Laverty, Xavier Siméon, Takumi Takahashi and Alex Márquez.
Guintoli tested the new engine on Wednesday, a development that the Hamamatsu firm had also released during the Valencia test in preparation for the 2018 season. Iannone had this power unit on Thursday. Sylvain also tested the new aerodynamic device: “During the Valencia tests, the team was already using a new fairing. However, it is very important to test with replica fins on multiple tracks, as they affect many areas such as electronics, handling and overall feel on the bike. It was very interesting because it’s a big step forward from the previous version.”
“In addition, I was allowed to work on the engine prototype for 2018. It was also very good and interesting, although Jerez is not a track where power makes a big difference.
“I also wanted to understand how the character of the engine related to the handling of the bike. That was one of the most important things.
“I also used a carbon fork and another frame. We did a lot of comparisons. Many things are happening at Suzuki.
“I did almost 100 laps and had a lot of fun. I also really liked it because the Michelin tires give a unique feeling… Now it’s time for the work to start for 2018.”
Andrea Iannone declared himself satisfied with the development carried out: “ I am happy. The difference is not huge, but nevertheless positive » summed up The Maniac. “ In all areas we have improved, but without big steps for power and speed. Overall, every area is now one percent better. We didn't ask for more power either. It is much more important that we can use it.
“My feelings with the bike are improving day by day. Suzuki did a very good job during the season. We have already tested a lot for 2018, the results show it. We must not rest now, but must continue to work intensively. We have some limitations, Suzuki is working on them. The cornering is good, the machine is very agile. »
