All the drivers present this weekend had an appointment this morning for a test day, with a second this Tuesday for some, and they were all there (except Team Aspar), joined by Sylvain Guintoli replacing Alex Rins at Suzuki and Mika Kallio as a tester for KTM.

One of the aims of these tests was to evaluate the new Michelin front tire with a stiffer construction, and with this in mind each driver had the same tires as during the weekend, plus two new fronts in medium compound and two in compound hard.

This type of tire was evaluated during the Valencia tests at the end of last season, but put aside because it caused too much chatter for some. At Sepang, most drivers preferred the softer construction. Then finally Valentino Rossi, Andrea Iannone and Honda drivers Marc Marquez, Dani Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow wondered if the stiffer version was not better on certain circuits. The current two days of testing should provide some answer to this question.

For effective results, the riders performed consecutive series of runs, without changing the bike's settings, to have a healthy basis for comparison.

The Ducatis carried out these tests with a classic fairing, the replacement for the “anvil head” model currently being studied in the wind tunnel.

On the side of Maverick Vinales, we wondered within his team if the problems experienced during the race could not have been caused by the high temperature. From his third lap this hand, he turned in 1'38.878, while during the Grand Prix his best time was 1'40.706. During the warm up on Sunday morning, Maverick recorded a time of 1'39.433.

An hour after the start of the session, Vinales was in the lead with this 1'38.878, 0.121 ahead Alex Espargaro, 0.163 ahead Marc Marquez and 0.246 ahead Jorge Lorenzo. Valentino Rossi, Johann Zarco and Jonas Folger were the only ones who had not yet ridden. Sylvain Guintoli was planned only for Tuesday, with perhaps a few rounds of getting used to this Monday afternoon.

Vinales progressed in 1'38.635, 0.002 ahead of Marc Marquez. Johann zarco started and 22 drivers took to the track. Valentino Rossi joined them at 11:53 a.m.
