Marc Marquez quickly took the lead in 1'31.692.

Marquez accelerated to 1'31.637, then 1'31.511 with 15 minutes to go. He then preceded Johann Zarco by 0.2, with a lead of 0.4 over Jack Miller, Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone.
Marc's time was all the more impressive as he was only 4 tenths off Jorge Lorenzo's lap record, which seemed fast for a first free practice session, especially with the relatively low temperature.

Jack Miller took the lead 8 minutes from the checkered flag in 1'31.357, two tenths off the lap record. He preceded Marquez by 0.1, Zarco by 0.4 and Dovizioso, Iannone and Lorenzo by 0.6. The “Miller show” ended 6 minutes from time when the Australian fell without seriousness.

Mika Kallio surprised favorably by lifting his KTM into fourth position behind Miller, Marquez and Zarco.
Andrea Iannone placed his Suzuki in first place 3 minutes from the end in 1'31.083, ahead of Jack Miller, Pol Espargaro, Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Marquez.
