The first day of WorldSSP action at Estoril held some surprises. Can Oncu shone in the Superpole, the prologue to the penultimate round of the 2025 FIM Supersport Championship.
Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) confirmed his status as a Friday specialist by taking pole position in 1'39.608, his fourth of the season. Unfazed by pressure, he dominated the session against unexpected competition. With a few minutes to go, Alberto Surra (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) looked threatening, but the Turk held firm. Surra secured his best result of the season in Superpole, just ahead of Valentin Debise (Renzi Corse), who finished a solid third in his third front row start in 2025.
Raffaele de Rosa (QJMOTOR Factory Racing) caused a surprise on his QJMOTOR SRK 800 RS, placing the Chinese manufacturer in its best-ever Superpole position with a provisional fourth place. However, his performance was marred by a penalty for excessive slowing on the line: he will start the race from seventh place. Marcel Schroetter (WRP Racing) snatched fifth place thanks to a last-gasp effort. Lucas Mahias (GMT94-YAMAHA), long hampered by various technical issues in free practice, showed perseverance and finished the day in sixth place.
Among the favorites, championship leader Stefano Manzi had a poor day. His thirteenth-place time condemned him to starting from the sixth row, nearly seven-tenths off Oncu's benchmark. Philipp Oettl (Feel Racing WorldSSP Team) led a pack of Ducati Panigale V2s, placing four machines in the top six by the midway point of the session, before finishing in seventh place.
Ondrej Vostatek (WRP Racing), eighth, posted his best performance of the year and finished ahead of Federico Caricasulo (D34G WorldSSP Racing Team), who suffered a slight fall but was close to the top 8 by 0.011 seconds. Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing), after a difficult start, recovered to complete the top 10 with a 1'40.283 which will give him the fourth row.
