The first private tests for the 2023 Superbike World Championship which are taking place in Jerez de la Frontera present quite a few new features. In these two days of testing disrupted by rain, Remy gardner undoubtedly stands out. The 2 Moto2021 World Champion arrives from a problematic season experienced in MotoGP. He accepted the GRT Yamaha challenge in order to relaunch his career. But it will not be a debut in Superbike per se. With even already a precedent in active racing in this regard.

Indeed, in 2016, in a problematic period of his career, he found himself occasionally racing in IDM. Entered that year in the CEV Moto2 then finding a place in the World Championship with Tasca Racing, the Australian accepted the offer to compete in two rounds of the IDM Superbike. He was entered in the Superstock class, with a Yamaha R1 prepared by the MGM team. Michael Galinski's structure, the current satellite team of BMW Motorrad in the Superbike world championship under the Bonovo banner, was in fact the reference team of the Trois Diapasons in IDM at the time, counting several category titles. Because Max Neukirchner was out of action due to injury, Wayne Gardner's son was called up to race with the R1 Stock with Lukas Trautmann promoted to SBK alongside Florian Alt.

Remy Gardner knows the Yamaha R1 well

Remy gardner tried the MGM R1 and was motivated to take on this challenge as a very young man since he was just an adult at the time. However, his debut on the terrible Zolder track did not bring great satisfaction: He qualified 20th (10th in his category) and, during the weekend, regretted a total of 4 falls. Two in the two heats, including one caused by a fall at the start triggered by another driver.

In the plans, Gardner Jr should also have contested the event on the emblematic Schleiz track, but on the eve of the event he preferred to abandon, since he was now the starting rider in Moto2. A package not really welcomed by the MGM Yamaha team, which found itself without a rider a few days before one of the most anticipated rounds of the IDM calendar.

Seven years after this brief interlude within the IDM, Remy Gardner once again embraces the Yamaha and Superbike cause. The R1, however, never left his side. It is still his training bike and recently he took to the track in Cartagena, accompanied by his inseparable friend Peter Acosta.
