Eugene Laverty is finally at home in Portugal, a stone's throw from the Portimao circuit. The factory driver BMW was able to leave Australia after the long hospitalization following the dramatic accident of the last Superbike round at Phillip Island, when he crashed in turn 1 and was hit by Xavi Fores. A dramatic dynamic that, only for happy circumstances, did not turn into tragedy. Laverty in the impact had suffered a fracture of the right hip, pelvis and sacrum. He was taken by helicopter to Melbourne Hospital, with doctors ruling out the need for surgery. But something went wrong.

Eugene Laverty: “ I would like to thank the Superbike organizers for stopping the race immediately after my accident, it was providential«

Laverty he himself revealed that he left the hospital after only four days in hospital, with the only recommendation from doctors not to leave Australia immediately so that the injuries could resolve before enduring the stress of the long flight back. Heavenly advice, because just 24 hours later, Eugene was forced to go to the hospital again due to internal bleeding. However, the problem was not that serious and was resolved after another eight days of stay at the same Melbourne hospital. Now a new life can begin for Eugene Laverty : in 2023, he will lead the operations of the Bonovo team, the satellite team BMW. If physical conditions permit, he will be able to take care of testing the new M1000RR. But it will be time to evaluate.

« Phillip Island was supposed to be my last race, but This was not how I had imagined ending my career " commented Eugene Laverty, an Irishman from 36 years who has long been a protagonist of Superbike and MotoGP. “ The hospital stay was more complicated and longer than expected, but it's lucky to always have my wife Pippa by my side. We finally got home, but I want to thank the Superbike organizers for stopping the race immediately after my accident, it was providential. I also thank the medical staff at Phillip Island, it is also thanks to them that the consequences were less than they could have been. The Superbike riders are truly in very good hands ».
