Loris Baz is forced to rest after the accident he had during the Superpole Race of the Superbike round in Indonesia. Contact caused by Alex Lowes fractured his right fibula and damaged the ligaments in his right ankle. Returning to Europe, he was forced to resort to surgery, which took place in Switzerland at the Tour hospital. His hope is to be able to be present at the next meeting on my season calendar scheduled for the weekend of April 21-23 in Assen. On the other hand, the absence from the test at the end of March in Barcelona is certain.

The Frenchman spoke to the official WorldSBK website about the Mandalika crash and what happened after: “ I knew right away that he had broken something in his leg. The impact was so strong that I thought it had come loose.. I was in a lot of pain and my ankle was three times thicker than normal. They advised me to have ankle surgery right away., but I preferred to go home and have an operation by a specialist. »

Loris Baz: “ The surgeon told me there was more damage than initially thought »

He was operated on by Dr. Adrien Ray, an expert in ankle surgery. The driver of the Bonovo Action BMW team then details his injury: “CIt is not a fracture caused by impact, but by movement. When Alex hit me, my ankle came completely out and all the ligaments were torn. The fibula will repair itself. The surgeon told me there was more damage than initially thought. There is work to be done and I must be patient. »

Loris Baz was also asked about recovery times and replied: “JI don't know them exactly, but the goal is to return to Assen as fit as possible. Now, for two weeks, I can no longer do anything, because the work done on the ligaments must bear fruit. I'm sitting on the couch with my leg up and some ice. Then I will start physiotherapy. I'm going to fail the test, but I hope to be in Assen. »

The French driver will strictly respect the schedule established by the doctors and is confident of the possibility of being in action on the TT Assen circuit in five weeks: “ I think 95% I will be in Assen, although I'm not sure what my condition will be. When I start rehab, it will be in less than two weeks. I have a good physiotherapist, we will work together. »

It is inevitable to also question him about the situation of BMW, who started the Superbike World Championship with a lot of problems and who finds himself last in the manufacturers' standings: “ Everyone at BMW and in the team works hard – he explains – and no one gave up. We have made an improvement, although it is not big enough. I believe in the project and I'm sure we'll get there. Yamaha and especially Ducati have raised the bar. Kawasaki is also in trouble. »

Baz continues to be optimistic about his future with the German brand. Even though the new M 1000 RR has so far fallen short of expectations, he sees some positive glimmers. Certainly, things have improved a little in Indonesia, after a particularly complicated first round in Australia. We'll see how it goes in Europe. In the meantime, we wish Loris a speedy and complete recovery!
