The operation to reduce the vertebral fractures suffered by Sandro Cortese who fell during the Superbike 1 race in Portimao was a perfect success

The operation of Sandra Cortese, rider of the Kawasaki Pedercini team, injured after the Superbike 1 race in Portimao, was completely successful. The medical structure of the World Championship communicated that the 30-year-old German pilot had undergone an arthrodesis of the vertebrae injured in the fall, at the level of T5-T7 and T8-T9. Further examinations also revealed the fracture of four ribs on the right side and a suspected fracture of the right ankle.

There is no problem with the spinal cord

Doctors confirm that the vertebral fractures did not cause neurological problems, so Sandro Cortese will be able to get back on their feet relatively quickly. The shock, however, was very severe but the consequences more extensive but less serious than it seemed at first. Fortunately, Sandra Cortese never lost consciousness. The reason for this accident is accidental contact with Leander Market during the last Superbike lap and a violent impact against the protective wall. Given the situation, after a quick check at the circuit medical center, Cortese was taken to Faro hospital, where he underwent surgery.

A frightening fall for Kawasaki team rider Pedercini, who was immediately taken to the circuit's medical center. He was then evacuated by helicopter to the local hospital for further assistance. The Italian – German underwent an operation at the Faro hospital, avoiding the risks that the transfer to Germany would entail. He may be back in the next few days, ready to begin his rehabilitation.

Sandra Cortese is in his second season in World Superbike. His best result to date is ninth place in Race 2 at Phillip Island. In Portugal, he fought for sixteenth position against Leandro Mercado when he fell, also hitting the protective wall at high speed at turn #11. As mentioned, the injury is serious, but less serious than expected, especially because the neurological damage that was feared was avoided.
