The 2024 World Superbike Championship kicks off currently at the Phillip Island circuit, but for Iker Lecuona, Australia is already over!

The official driver of the No. 7 Honda suffered a highside during Tuesday's practice, from which he recovered with an injured left shoulder. Declared fit although to be seen again on Friday evening, and apparently in good shape, the Spaniard was therefore preparing to begin the timed tests with hope.

“I have to say that until last night I couldn't ride the bike because it was too much. However, when I woke up, I felt great. I spoke with José and checked in with the medical team here. I'm in good shape for tomorrow morning, but this circuit is difficult on the shoulders with the speed, the wind and the bumps. With the Honda we have to work more than others on other bikes. I will try and then I will make the decision whether to continue or not. »

On Friday, the 24-year-old Valencian took part in both practice sessions, but only completed 5 laps in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. He ultimately suffered much more than expected, before being declared unfit to continue the weekend in Australia.

Too bad for the HRC driver who appreciates the Australian track which he achieved two top 6 finishes last year, one of his best weekends of the season.

It will therefore be only 22 drivers who will participate in the qualifying Superpole which will take place at 3:00 a.m. tonight, French time.

“I tried to ride this morning, but the wet track conditions meant I could only complete four laps and I already had pain in my left shoulder. I was still determined to try again in the afternoon, as I wasn't ready to give up on the race. But I still had a lot of pain during the second session, which forced me to spin at a very slow pace. The gap in seconds between me and the top riders was therefore too big, also because I was riding cautiously, constantly aware that even a minor fall could exacerbate the problem with my shoulder. This meant I struggled to stay focused, as I was acutely aware of my physical limitations and reduced performance. When I tried to push harder with a set of new tires, even a little while braking or changing direction, I found myself unable to do so due to severe shoulder pain. After widening into turn 4, I realized it would be dangerous to continue driving for the rest of the weekend. I'm sorry for my team and everyone involved, but it's definitely wiser for me to stop and come back in top shape for the next round in Barcelona. »
