For his first participation in the FIM Superbike World Championship, Garrett Gerloff, of the GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team, has been awarded the title of “one to watch” for 2021. The American reached the podium three times at the end of last season and, while many drivers stayed in Europe over the winter to train, Gerloff returned across the Atlantic to recharge your batteries and be better prepared for the upcoming campaign.

After the season ended, Gerloff remained at his European base, just outside Barcelona, and returned to work one final time in 2020 for the WorldSBK post-season test, before heading to his hometown from Texas to spend the next two months with family and friends.

« I returned to the United States in December », said Garrett gerloff. “I love being home because I missed my family and friends, and I just wanted to come back and see everyone. Christmas was approaching and yes, these were all the reasons why I wanted to return home rather than stay in Europe during the winter. I stayed at Barcelona for a while after the end of the season and the trials. I trained a lot in Spain before coming, but I knew it wouldn't have been the best thing for my mental health to stay there, away from my family. »

When the 25-year-old stays in Europe, he works with the coach Alex Santacreu, who has collaborated with the likes of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team rider, Maverick Vinales.

“Aleix Santacreu is a very good coach and I had the chance to be part of his group, " said gerloff. " I I'm really excited to come back to Europe and work with him again before the start of the new season. I have had a very good trainer here for five years now, he trains the Texans, the American football team, and he also works with many bodybuilders and other athletes from different sports. I haven't been able to see it as much as before, but I keep up to date with what's going on here.
To be honest, I've never really been a big gym person, so my workout routine this winter hasn't really been any different than it has been in the past. I guess a lot of things are back to almost "normal" where I am, in terms of being open, but of course I'm taking precautions. »

Alongside that, Garrett gerloff enjoyed maximum on-track activity, as he also attended the opening of the AMA Supercross Championship in Houston, Texas, in January, and raced on two wheels and four on his home track. local karting.

" For To be honest, I've been doing a bunch of things here, just trying to enjoy being here most of the time.", said gerloff. “Going to the Supercross races was really fun. I went with a few friends, staying in a downtown location, and the shopping was great. I also did a bit of karting and raced my Yamaha R3 on the track, which was fun.
I also rode the Yamaha YZ250 at my local motocross track, so as you can probably tell, most of my life revolves around motorcycles. I'm still on two wheels, but other than that it was just good to relax, and not much else happened. »

Garrett gerloff is now preparing to return to Europe for the 2021 season, where he is due to be back in action for the Misano test on March 15-16 aboard his Yamaha R1.

"When I'll go to Europe, I'll probably go straight to Andorra, where I live, but I'll train again pretty soon. Before the season starts, I will try to train as much as possible: on my bike, with the YZ450, and doing Flat Track, Motocross, and doing pretty much everything I did before. Then we will be in Misano for the first test of 2021, where we can hopefully see how competitive we are ahead of the season. »
