Since his second place at the German Grand Prix, it has now been two weekends that Jonas Folger has consistently shown a very fast pace but has failed to materialize in the race, each time for reasons beyond his control.
During the Austrian Grand Prix, the German driver, who started from 13th position, had to stop on the third lap after gaining three places and getting in the wake of Loris Baz who was sailing in 9th position.
Jonas Folger : “I have to admit that it was a really difficult weekend for us with a lot of ups and downs. We tried a new chassis but couldn't tell if it was better or not on this track, and in the end I wasn't very confident with it on this track. Nevertheless, I felt good during the Warm up even if my position was quite low because I used worn tires. Plus my performance in qualifying wasn't that bad if we look at the time. As a result, I felt confident going into the race, but suffered a technical problem there and had to retire. It's a shame because I think we could have done a good job and brought home some important points for the championship. Now we need to analyze what happened so that it doesn't happen again. »
As a true professional, the German pilot does not give any details on the technical problem encountered. However, in front of his fellow press, he specifies: “Unfortunately, the brakes went on strike. I was lucky to notice it in time. In the first corner, the braking pressure suddenly almost disappeared. When I got to turn #3, I tried again to increase the brake pressure, but it was completely gone. I had to stop. I know the brakes were replaced after my crash at Warm up. Now the calipers and master cylinder should be examined to see if everything is in order. »
Braking pressure which disappears after 2 laps of racing is an extremely rare phenomenon which calls into question Hervé Poncharal : “Jonas encountered a really strange braking problem. We are currently working with Brembo to determine what happened as this has never happened in the past. I really feel sorry for Jonas. »
Jonas Folger is in eighth position in the world championship, with 77 points.
