The 2026 Formula 1 season will begin well before the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. With the introduction of completely redesigned technical regulations, particularly concerning power units, F1 and the FIA have decided to implement an unprecedented winter testing program to support teams through this major transition.
Formula 1 2026: Testing: Barcelona kicks things off at the end of January
In recent seasons, the stables of Formula 1 They only had a single three-day test in Bahrain before the start of the championship. In 2026, this model is shattered. The expected technical upheaval—new power units, revised aerodynamics, and profoundly modified energy management—has prompted the governing bodies to significantly extend the preparation phase.
Result: three separate test sessions, spread between the end of January and the end of February, for an unprecedented total of nine days of driving.
The first pre-season session of Formula 1 will take place from January 26 to 30 at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit. This initial phase, organized behind closed doors and without public broadcast, will primarily serve to validate the fundamental concepts of the new 2026 F1 single-seaters.
Each team will, however, be limited to a maximum of three days of testing over the entire week. Note that Williams Ferrari and McLaren will not participate at this session,
The cars will take to the track from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. (French time) each day, with a possible one-hour extension depending on the light conditions.
After Barcelona, the Formula 1 will travel to the Bahrain International Circuit for the final two phases of winter testing. The first session is scheduled from February 11 to 13, followed by a final test from February 18 to 20.
Unlike Barcelona, these tests will be more intensive, with nine hours of running per day, from 8:00 AM to 17:00 PM (French time). These days will be crucial, as they represent the last opportunity for teams to optimize their setups, ensure the reliability of their new engines, and refine their aerodynamic packages before the start of the season.
With nine days of testing in total, the Formula 1 2026 will benefit from an unprecedented level of preparation since the introduction of the hybrid era. This is an essential luxury for getting to grips with the profoundly transformed cars and starting to establish the initial balance of power before Melbourne.
