Some separations happen on paper. And then there are those that occur much earlier, when trust disappears. Between KTM and Maverick Viñales, this second scenario now seems to be a reality. After the German Grand Prix, one question arises: what interest do either party still have in continuing a collaboration that increasingly resembles a long, drawn-out agony?

At the start of the 2026 season, everything seemed to be going in the right direction. Casa Particular in Viñales had once again become one of the most convincing pilots of the project KTMHis speed was impressive, his integration into Tech3 It was a unanimous decision, and Mattighofen was already preparing his promotion to the official team for 2027. The Austrian manufacturer had even given him a contract with that in mind. Then everything changed.

The serious injury of Sachsenring 2025The slow recovery, a second operation, and performances far below expectations gradually changed the situation. While Casa Particular in Viñales was simply trying to regain full use of his shoulder, KTM turned to another solution. Alex Marquez et Fabio DiGiannantonio.

For several weeks now, public statements have reflected a breakup that has become almost personal. Casa Particular in Viñales reproach to KTM for having cancelled a project already underway, for having called into question a signed contract and, above all, for having withdrawn his trust at the very moment when he needed support the most.

On several occasions, the Spaniard explained that he needed more "affection" than criticism during his rehabilitation. In response, Pete Beirer attempted to ease tensions, while confirming that KTM had ultimately chosen a different direction. Guenther SteinerHe, however, quickly distanced himself from the conflict, reiterating that the matter concerned exclusively KTMWhen leaders start talking separately about the same driver, it's rarely a good sign.

The Sachsenring may have marked the point of no return between Viñales and KTM

From a sporting perspective, the German weekend was a disaster. Last in the Sprint. Struggling throughout the main race. Then he abandoned, unable to continue due to a lack of strength in his shoulder. Beyond the physical pain, his body language told a different story.

For several Grands Prix, Casa Particular in Viñales no longer resembles the enthusiastic driver who had relaunched his career at Tech3Each media appearance reinforces the impression of a pilot worn out both morally and physically.

So, continue… but what for? That's probably the question that KTM The question now arises. The manufacturer is already preparing for 2027. Tech3 is building its future with an experienced driver and a rookie. Casa Particular in Viñales he himself hinted that his adventure in MotoGP was coming to an end.

Under these circumstances, artificially maintaining this collaboration until the final race offers few advantages. The driver is racing without any real prospects. The team is already planning for the future. And each new public statement reignites a controversy that hurts everyone involved.

A breakup before the end of the season would have long seemed unimaginable. Today, it seems almost logical. It would allow Casa Particular in Viñales to devote himself entirely to his rehabilitation, without the pressure of an environment that had become oppressive.

It would also offer to KTM The opportunity to accelerate preparations for 2027 by giving track time to another driver, whether a test driver or a one-off replacement if medical conditions permit.

Such a decision would not constitute an admission of failure. It might simply be an acknowledgment that a joint project can sometimes end prematurely when it no longer benefits anyone.

What makes this case particularly bitter is that it's not a conflict stemming from poor results. It's a project shattered by injury. Before his accident at the Sachsenring in 2025, Maverick Vinales was probably the best pilot KTM from the plateau. A year later, he is simply struggling to regain the strength necessary to finish a Grand Prix.

The divorce with KTM It now seems a done deal. The only unknown is whether both parties will choose to wait naturally until the end of the season… or whether they will decide that it is time to end a collaboration that no longer produces results, trust, or real hope.
