In March 2016, following tests carried out by the CarXpert team with vertical appendages on the saddle of Dominique Aegerter's Kalex (see here), wings had been banned in Moto2.

Then, in May of the same year, the Grand Prix Commission had also banned those of Moto3, the team Aspar-Mahindra having made some tests in this area (see here).

But what is really happening today?

It turns out that, without really making any noise, the aerodynamic regulations concerning Moto2 and Moto3 have aligned with those of MotoGP…

" The Dis devices or shapes protruding from the fairing or bodywork and not iintegrated into the body streamlining (e.g. wings, fins, bulges, etc.) which may provide an aerodynamic effect (e.g. downforce or disruption of the aerodynamic wake, etc.) are not permitted. The Technical Director will be the sole judge of whether a device or fairing design falls within the above definition. Mobile aerodynamic devices are prohibited. »

So, concretely, in 2017 and 2018, fins are still prohibited, like in MotoGP, but they can now be used in a disguised form, like in MotoGP!

This obviously did not go unnoticed by those interested, starting with KTM whose Moto2 fairing is gradually starting to resemble that of its MotoGP. And even if the advantages provided by these pseudo fins are less important in the lower categories, the aerodynamic tests continue with interest!

So don't be surprised if, little by little, you see new aerodynamic features emerging in Moto2, and possibly in Moto3...
