The poster is spectacular, but the verdict won't be decided by a poster: Max Verstappen and Valentino Rossi will share the grid for the GT World Challenge Europe at Portimão this weekend, amidst a field of 61 cars. The Dutchman is fresh off a Formula 1 victory in Singapore; the Italian, meanwhile, is already familiar with GT3 battles. Two champions, two cars, and three hours to remind everyone that in endurance racing, the name on the door isn't everything.

Verstappen – Rossi: on Youtube live!
Not a two-person duel
The poster's image announces a " Champions' Showdown ." The phrase sells the event, but it needs clarification: Verstappen and Rossi won't be alone on the track, nor even alone in their driver lineups. Max will be driving the #3 Verstappen Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 , alongside Ben Barnicoat and Chris Lulham . Rossi will be competing in the #46 Team WRT BMW M4 GT3 , with Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen . Both cars are entered in the Pro category.
The race won't simply be a personal confrontation between the former MotoGP king and the four-time F1 world champion. Drivers will also have to contend with stints, traffic, pit stops, and teammates. In GT3, a car can lose time while another driver is at the wheel; it can also gain time thanks to a well-executed strategy. The duel of legends is the hook. Teamwork will decide the outcome.
The lineup is certainly enough to dampen the enthusiasm of those hoping for a predictable scenario: more than 60 cars and ten manufacturers are expected. Valentino Rossi , nine-time world champion in motorcycle racing, has already won three GT World Challenge Sprint Cup races . He will be reunited with seasoned drivers and specialists such as Maro Engel, Mirko Bortolotti, Nicki Thiim, and Arthur Leclerc . In other words, Verstappen isn't just showing up at a prestigious event where the only activity is posing for photographers.
Verstappen is discovering the series, not the circuit
For Max, Portimão marks his debut in the GT World Challenge Europe . It's not his first experience in GT3: he's already competed in endurance racing, notably on the Nordschleife. But the habits of F1 don't automatically translate to a three-hour race, with shared cars, different categories, and constant traffic.
Verstappen makes no secret of his enthusiasm. Upon the announcement of his participation, he declared: " It's going to be a busy seven weeks, but I'm going to enjoy it. " He added that he loved the circuit and Portugal, before concluding: " We'll see what we can do in Portimão. "
A measured ambition, at least in words. As for the result, the Mercedes #3 will first have to compete against the crews who contest the full season and know the intricacies of the series.
The Dutchman also humorously summed up his desire to cross paths with Rossi : gladly in the paddock, less so during the race. " I hope I don't see him during the race ," he quipped, explaining that this would generally be a good sign—in other words, that he would be ahead. The joke is amusing; it also serves as a reminder that a battle between the two men will depend not only on their celebrity status, but also on their actual position on the track.
The program, without getting the time zone wrong
The weekend takes place from October 16th to 18th. The times shown on the image are in Korean time: to avoid confusion, here are the local times in Portimão. Free practice sessions are scheduled for Friday at 8:45 AM and 12:45 PM, followed by qualifying at 5:55 PM. The three-hour race will start on Saturday at 5:00 PM. The official GT World YouTube channel will broadcast the sessions and the race for free.
Portimão is also the final round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance season . The Pro category drivers' title has already been decided, but several championships remain up for grabs, particularly in Gold and Bronze. For the Pro crews of Verstappen and Rossi , the organizers have stated that the objective is simply to win the race. The two champions will therefore have a great showcase, but no category title to contend for.
The event promises a rare spectacle, a strong field, and a race long enough to put the stars in their place: behind the wheel, with three hours of strategy ahead of them. Will Rossi be able to draw on his series experience? Will Verstappen immediately find his rhythm against the specialists? And above all, will we actually see them battling on the track, or will we have to be content with just greeting them in the paddock? Max, for his part, has already made his preference clear: to get a better glimpse of Valentino in his mirrors, he'll first have to be in front.
