MotoGP, Australia Day 2 BREAKING NEWS: Honda HRC no longer has any riders, Marini declared unfit in turn

After Joan Mir, Luca Marini has also withdrawn from Phillip Island. Honda HRC is left without a factory rider in Australia.

Luca marini

It's a situation as rare as it is embarrassing for the world's leading motorcycle manufacturer. Honda HRC will have no factory riders for the remainder of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix! Already without Joan Mir, the Japanese team has just lost Luca Marini, who was declared medically unfit on Saturday morning at Phillip Island. The cause: a viral infection accompanied by a high fever and persistent muscle weakness. And as if that weren't enough, the test riders who could have bolstered Honda's ranks are also unavailable.

Luca Marini: two laps on Friday, then the medical verdict

The first worrying signs appeared as early as Friday morning. Luca Marini had tried to participate in FP1 , but had only been able to complete two flying laps, finishing more than six seconds behind the best time set by Marc Marquez.

The Italian then withdrew from the afternoon pre-qualifying session. As his condition had not improved, a further medical examination was conducted on Saturday morning. The verdict was in: he was unfit to continue in the Australian Grand Prix.

MotoGP's chief medical officer, Dr. Angel Charte , clarified the chronology of symptoms: " For the past week, Luca Marini has been suffering from a viral infection and a high fever for the last three or four days ." Even more concerning, the rider has been experiencing generalized muscle weakness for several days.

" For the past 48 to 72 hours, he has been suffering from muscle weakness caused by the virus, affecting both his upper and lower body ." On Saturday morning, the symptoms were still present. The doctor therefore refused to allow him to return to the track.

A necessary precautionary measure in a sport where the physical demands and consequences of losing control can be considerable. Marini 's condition will be reassessed at the next Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Joan Mir absent: Honda HRC practically closes its garage

This withdrawal has an immediate consequence: Honda HRC no longer has any representatives from its factory team on the Australian grid. Joan Mir had already been absent due to ongoing health problems since Misano.

The Japanese manufacturer had chosen not to replace him at Phillip Island , relying instead on Marini to represent the factory team alone. But with the Italian's withdrawal, this solution is no longer viable.

This is a particularly damaging situation for Honda , which not only loses any possibility of a result with its official team, but also a weekend of data collection in a season where technical development remains essential.

The Hondas entered by LCR naturally continue their participation, but this does not entirely replace the work planned by the HRC structure.

Luca Marini withdraws from the Australian Grand Prix

Even Honda's test riders are unavailable!

The most striking aspect remains the accumulation of absences. Takaaki Nakagami , one of the manufacturer's test riders, was injured during his participation in the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi. Aleix Espargaró , another HRC test rider, is also unavailable after undergoing surgery related to compartment syndrome.

Honda finds itself in a particularly difficult situation: Joan Mir is absent for medical reasons. Luca Marini has been declared unfit due to a viral infection. Takaaki Nakagami is unavailable after an injury sustained at Motegi. Aleix Espargaró is unavailable following surgery. Four riders involved in the official program, four simultaneous absences. This accumulation of injuries goes far beyond a simple sporting setback.

Malaysia is already becoming Marini's next target

Honda will now have to wait until Sepang to hopefully have its riders back and resume its development program as normal. For Marini , the priority remains recovery, with another medical evaluation scheduled in Malaysia.

For HRC, however, this Australian Grand Prix will be remembered for the total absence of its factory team in the race.

At Phillip Island, Honda isn't just lacking performance: it's now lacking riders. And in a championship where every session counts for future development, this is a situation that even the world's largest manufacturer certainly hadn't anticipated.
