Three seconds slower? Not at all: the first tests of the 2027 MotoGP bikes are already revealing that the much-anticipated revolution might be less spectacular than expected. For months, MotoGP has been preparing for its revolution. A new 850cc engine displacement. Significantly reduced aerodynamics. The disappearance of suspension adjustment devices. The arrival of Pirelli in place of Michelin. On paper, everything seemed to point to a radical change in philosophy. And yet, the first tests organized in Brno are already shaking up several assumptions.

Because behind the closed doors of the Czech circuit, the manufacturers discovered an unexpected reality: the future MotoGP bikes may not be as far removed from the current machines as we imagined.

The test, organized with the utmost discretion, constituted the first real confrontation between the new generation 850cc prototypes, the tires Pirelli and several drivers who are regular championship holders.

Our pilots were present, among whom Marc Marquez, Pedro Acosta, Marco Bezzecchi, Raul Fernandez, Joan Mir, Luca Marini, Toprak Razgatlioglu or Fermin AldeguerThe goal wasn't to seek pure performance but to collect data. Yet, as is often the case in motorsport, the lap times already tell a story.

So both Aprilia set the tone from the very first hours. Marco Bezzecchi et Raul fernandez signed at the same time 1'53 "9demonstrating that the future Noale machine already seems to have a solid foundation.

Just behind, Fermin Aldeguer placed his Ducati in 1'54″0, while Toprak Razgatlioglu distinguished himself with a remarkable 1'54″2 on the Yamaha . Peter Acosta rode the KTM up to 1'54″3 and Marc Marquez finished his day in 1'54"4 despite a spectacular fall without physical consequences.

Taken individually, these times may seem insignificant. They are not. Because the absolute circuit record now belongs to Ai Ogura with an impressive 1'51 "139 taken during Grand Prix qualifying. The gap between the future 850cc bikes and the current MotoGP bikes is therefore less than three seconds..

Less than three seconds for motorcycles still under development, fitted with experimental tires, ridden as part of a testing program and lacking several technologies that now form the core of modern MotoGP performance. That's probably the main takeaway from today.

For a long time, the paddock presented 2027 as a technical breakthrough comparable to those that had accompanied the switch from two-stroke to four-stroke or the arrival of 1000cc engines.

Brno On the contrary, it suggests a much more gradual transition. The motorcycles will be different. They will undoubtedly be less aerodynamically aggressive. Starts will change with the disappearance of holeshot devices. The tires will alter the overall handling of the machines.

But pure performance could remain much closer than expected. This observation also explains the cautious tone adopted by George Barbier, Director of Pirelli Motorsport.

« The data collected, along with that from upcoming private tests, the September tests after the Austrian Grand Prix, and the end-of-season tests in Valencia, will be fundamental in defining the final characteristics of the 2027 range. »

Initial data suggests, on the contrary, that the future MotoGP bikes are already much faster than expected.

The Italian official also insists that Brno represents only one step in a much longer process. All manufacturers successfully completed the agreed programs, with differentiated test plans for the two motorcycles to maximize data collection.. Collaboration with drivers and manufacturers remains very constructive, and developments are progressing according to plan. »

In other words, no one is yet aiming for top speed. And yet the times are already there. Another important lesson: Aprilia seems to have prepared this transition particularly well. While the brand is currently going through a difficult period in the league with the suspension of Marco Bezzecchi and the recent difficulties of George Martin, the results observed at Brno show that Noale engineers are already working effectively on the post-2026 era. See Bezzecchi et Fernandez Immediately topping the unofficial rankings is probably not a coincidence.

On the side of DucatiAttention naturally turned to Marc MarquezHis spectacular crash was a reminder that even the best riders are still getting to grips with these new bikes. But the fact that the Spaniard still finished only five-tenths of a second off the fastest time also shows that Borgo Panigale is immediately in the running.

The real battle begins now. Because Brno This was just a first contact. The next meetings at Red Bull Ring then Valencia will allow for tire optimization Pirellito continue the development of 850cc engines and, above all, to understand which manufacturers will have really taken the lead on this new generation.

MotoGP 2027 will be different. But those expecting a performance collapse are likely to be disappointed. Early data suggests the opposite: the future machines are already much faster than expected.
