MotoGP Qatar BREAKING NEWS: Riders demand security and evacuation guarantees before flying to Losail!

Faced with military tensions in the Gulf, the riders are demanding security guarantees. MotoGP, however, is maintaining the Losail circuit.

Pilotes

At Phillip Island, the protests are no longer limited to contracts, sanctions, or promotional obligations. This time, the MotoGP riders are tackling a far more serious issue: their safety in a war zone. With less than two weeks to go before the Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for November 6-8, a majority of them have reportedly expressed their opposition to the relocation. And faced with a management determined to maintain the event, the paddock is beginning to make its voice heard. This standoff could mark a turning point in the relationship between the riders and the organizers.

Two-thirds of the pilots opposed the move?

According to The Race, a meeting held Thursday at Phillip Island allowed drivers to discuss the risks surrounding the Qatar Grand Prix . The reported result is particularly revealing: approximately two-thirds of the participants reportedly voted against holding the race in the region.

This count has not been officially confirmed, but it illustrates the extent of the concerns. The Losail Grand Prix was originally scheduled for April. It was postponed to November due to the conflict between the United States and Iran.

Since then, the regional situation has remained worrying, particularly with the attacks attributed to the Houthis against Saudi Arabia and the threats of new American military operations against Iran.

Qatar is not necessarily directly involved in every episode of this confrontation. But pilots fear the consequences of a regional escalation on their safety and their ability to leave the country. This concern is difficult to dismiss with a simple argument about timing.

Carlos Ezpeleta faces drivers who want answers

According to Motorsport, the riders' representatives have now taken their demands to Carlos Ezpeleta , head of the MotoGP group. They want guarantees covering several scenarios of the situation deteriorating during their stay.

The issue is therefore not limited to the safety of the circuit. It also concerns travel, accommodation, evacuation options and the potential consequences of an airspace closure.

Because that's precisely one of the major risks. A disruption of air links in the Gulf could immobilize part of the paddock, complicate the transport of equipment, and jeopardize the final European rounds. Grand Prix security doesn't end with the fences surrounding the track. It also involves being able to reach the circuit and, above all, leave it.

2025 Qatar MotoGP Grand Prix

MotoGP maintains its position, time is running out

For now, the organizers maintain that the Qatar Grand Prix will take place. The Losail circuit has also indicated that preparations for the event are entering their final phase.

But the calendar now demands a swift decision. After Phillip Island, the paddock must travel to Sepang , then Qatar , before finishing the season in Portugal and Valencia . Any last-minute changes would disrupt a considerable international logistical operation. Transporting motorcycles, freight, personnel, and flight bookings: every extra day reduces the margin for error.

The problem is therefore twofold. Holding the race without guarantees deemed sufficient could increase the drivers' distrust. Cancelling it late would have significant organizational and financial consequences.

A protest that now extends beyond Qatar

This mobilization comes amid an already tense social climate. Maverick Viñales has just denounced the contractual clauses which, according to him, force him to race injured in order to maintain his salary.

Meanwhile, MotoGP is toughening sanctions against absences from promotional events, even considering sporting penalties.

And now the pilots are collectively demanding guarantees in the face of a geopolitical risk.

So, what do we remember?

  • A majority opposed to the move: according to The Race, two-thirds of the drivers present at the meeting reportedly voted against it.
  • Guarantees demanded: pilots are asking for concrete answers in the event of a deterioration in safety.
  • An urgent decision is needed: the proximity of Sepang and Lusail complicates any changes to the schedule.

The right to say no becomes the central issue. MotoGP can defend its commercial and contractual commitments. The organizers can also determine, based on their own assessments, that the conditions are suitable for racing.

But the pilots are the ones who will have to physically go there. Asking them for guarantees is therefore neither a provocation nor a principled refusal to fulfill their professional obligations. It is a legitimate demand that requires specific answers.

At Phillip Island , the riders are no longer just discussing their freedom on the track. They are beginning to assert their right to influence decisions that affect their safety. And for MotoGP management , this change could prove to be far more lasting than the Qatari issue alone.

Start of the Qatar MotoGP 2025.
