Who is this discreet but jovial British person who we dare to compare to King Giacomo Agostini? Answer in this saga, composed of three articles.

Of course, even in three parts, the presentations will be brief and rightly so: The foundation Mike the Bike distinguishes seven books which retrace the life of the champion. The idea is to present the man and his greatest victories to you, all while placing it in the context of the time. Are you following us?

Stanley Michael Hailwood, unlike many of its Italian counterparts, was born on April 2, 1940 in luxury and comfort. His father, Stanley William Hailwood is a millionaire, with numerous businesses and a foothold in the motorcycle industry. Based in Great Milton, not far from Oxford (about an hour northwest of London), the family prospered.

At 10 years old, Michael is very interested in motorcycles, but must succeed in studies in order to maintain his rank. Seeing his son's passion grow over the years, William decides not to impose any additional pressure on him, and to send him to work in the family business.

The Tourist Trophy 1956 is a revelation. As a spectator, he discovers the biggest motorcycle race in the world, amazed by the --Ken Kavanagh, carlo ubbiali and other John Surtees. Michael now knows what he wants to do with his life.

His father sent him to work at Triumph as he prepared to run. In April 1957, he completed his first race and finished 11th, on the track ofOulton Park. It was in 1958 that “Mike” really exploded.

His talent stands out in promotional formulas reserved for young people. He is so strong that he is given time in the world championship, particularly on the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy.

Mike Hailwood and the TT, it’s a business that works. However, we have also written an article about this, in the section 'The Myths of the Tourist Trophy', to be published in a few weeks as there is so much material.

The genius races in four categories at the same time, without getting tired. In 1959, he asserted himself even more, without a contract with a major team, and won his very first world race at the Ulster Grand Prix 125 tsp

Everything changed in 1961, when the latter signed with Honda, a new brand in competition. On his RC162, he crushed the 250cc championship and won the world title, just four years after his debut. History is in progress.

In the 500cc category, he came across a bone. First engaged on Norton and MV Agusta, despite the contracts, Mike was always on different brands, never attached to a single manufacturer, especially at the start of his career, Hailwood bows against Gary Hocking overall, after finishing second six times.

Obviously the Italian machines were better. Count Agusta does not remain indifferent to the immense talent of the Englishman. He naturally offered him a handlebar for 1962; Very serious things now begin.

See you tomorrow for the second episode !
