After an intense 25 minutes of qualifying, Raúl Fernández took pole position for these rounds of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at the TT Assen circuit.
The young Spaniard (15 years old) took a slight advantage during the last ten minutes of the session, against the local hero Walid Soppe, in Japanese Ayumu Sasaki and Russian Makar Yurchenko.
First of all, only 5/100 faster than Walid Soppe (16 years old), he managed to widen a gap of 3 tenths during the last 5 minutes, while his unfortunate opponent was forced to watch him from the pit lane, his hand injured in Barcelona causing him too much pain.
Raul Fernandez: “J’ai pris mes marques, je me sentais bien sur la moto et j’étais simplement concentré pour réaliser un tour complet sans erreur. C’est ma première pole position et cela n’a pas été facile car j’ai dû utiliser une moto de rechange pour les premiers essais libres car j’ai eu un problème. La deuxième session était OK et nous avons commencé à trouver de bons réglages. En qualification, c’était quasiment parfait .
J’apprécie vraiment les virages rapides ici, alors que j’aurais pu mieux faire dans les plus lents car je n’y remets pas les gaz parfaitement. Je me sens maintenant très à l’aise sur la moto et cette vitesse n’était pas trop difficile, il fallait juste se concentrer.”
Walid Soppe: “J’ai blessé ma main à
Barcelone l’autre week-end, et je ne dispose d’aucune puissance.
Je ne voulais pas prendre de
risques. Néanmoins, pour la course, je vais oublier tout
ça.”
Soppe and Sasaki (15 years old) therefore complete the first row and we will note that if the first 4 drivers were all very fast at one point or another during qualifying, each in turn lighting up the red lights for the partials, only Fernández was able to line them all up in the same round...
