Yamaha, the Iwata-based company, continues to work in the field of supercharging: the patent filed at the time for supercharging management has been revealed and a hypothetical Yamaha MT Turbo seems closer.

It has been known for several years that Yamaha has been working on a supercharged version of its three-cylinder and the idea of a naked roadster with 180 horsepower and 18 kgm of torque at low revs has tickled the imagination of many. The path pursued by Yamaha in the development of this project seems in fact to seek an immediate response from the engine, to have a power supply rich in torque, to contain the maximum rotation speed but at the same time obtaining an exciting power allowing however to respect the limits of anti-pollution regulations which in the future will become more and more restrictive.

To do this we came to study – and this is what the patent filed in 2020 and delivered on August 17, 2022 unearthed by Youngmachine – a system that uses a single butterfly valve for the entire thermal group, equipped with direct injection and turbocharger placed in front of the cylinders, instead of a throttle body for each of the three cylinders. These are technologies borrowed from the automotive sector where the Yamaha patent could actually be significant in reducing turbo response lag, a particularly critical aspect on the driving dynamics of a motorcycle.

The impact of this technical choice on performance therefore seems to have a faster response, but above all to keep emissions to a minimum: we are talking about a reduction of 30% in CO2 and in any case more than half for carbon monoxide. carbon and nitrogen oxides compared to Euro 5 limits for the 847 cc in-line three-cylinder, same displacement as the previous version of the naturally aspirated MT-09 but equipped with variable valve timing, which would thus deliver 180 hp at 8 rpm with a very favorable torque curve and the impressive value of 500 kgm in the range of use which goes from 18 to 3 rpm. If the MT-000 is already known for its power, imagine what they could do with this engine...

The drawings and photo show the engine equipped with supercharging mounted, in fact, on an MT-10, this does not necessarily mean that this will be the bike designated to receive it, it is – as usual in the case of patents – a hypothesis of study and development and it is not even certain that the motorcycle or the turbo engine will then arrive in series.
