The 2018 Supersport Champion is in the running to replace Álex Márquez at Marc VDS in Moto2.

After concluding his first Superbike season this season, Sandra Cortese is now on the verge of replacing the Moto2 World Champion, Alex Marquez, with the Marc VDS team.

The German rider has seen his future completely turned upside down in recent days as he was waiting for a response from Ten Kate, a Yamaha satellite team which is still looking for a budget to add a second YZF-R1 to its 2020 season in addition to that of Loris Baz. But the announcement of the retirement of Jorge Lorenzo and the signing of the youngest of the Márquez brothers with the HRC team caused major upheavals which had repercussions all the way to Superbike.

Just last weekend, Johann Zarco seemed the ideal candidate to replace Lorenzo, but Honda's final decision and the Frenchman's possible signing with Avintia has re-opened the doors of Moto2 to Cortese. If his first season in WSBK was not easy, he also paid dearly for numerous crashes which prevented him from showing his potential as much as he hoped. Between Superbike with Ten Kate and Moto2 with one of the best teams, the balance seems to be tipping.

If Cortese manages to reach an agreement with Marc VDS and makes his return to the World Championship, Ten Kate risks having no one else while with the help of Yamaha Europe, the team had (almost) managed to complete your budget to have a second bike on the grid. The German's possible return to Moto2 would leave a major void in Superbike, since he is currently the only representative of his country, and it would fall right in the year of Germany's return to the calendar, after two years of break.
