Four days ago, Jorge Martín was forced to withdraw from the Malaysian Grand Prix after doing everything he could to be able to race. The Spanish rider fractured his radius in a high-speed crash during the sprint race in Australia the previous week. This injury came at the worst possible time in the MotoGP Championship , during the first of three consecutive Grands Prix at the end of the overseas tour.
Saved by the cancellation of the following day's race, he nevertheless had only five days to recover before taking to the track at the Sepang circuit the following Friday. Despite receiving the green light from doctors before and after FP1, Martín rode very little on the first day and prematurely ended practice in an attempt to conserve his energy for the next day.
But during FP2, he had to face the facts: his fracture was too recent to hope to complete two races and he therefore made the decision not to compete for the rest of the weekend in order to return home to continue his recovery.
With five additional days under his belt, he will try his luck again this weekend in Qatar. "It's a shame not to have been able to finish the weekend in Sepang, but having the chance to try was already a victory in itself. I returned to Spain to continue my treatment and arrive in Qatar in the best possible condition. We'll see how my body reacts. I'll start working with Aprilia on Thursday to see how far we can go ," he announced.
Another withdrawal could be considered before he can return to Portugal in two weeks, much better recovered. Nevertheless, Jorge Martín knows that Marc Márquez's first chance to clinch the title will come this weekend, and if his condition allows him to score some points, he will do everything he can to secure it. However, he stated a few days ago that he wouldn't take any unnecessary risks.
In summary: what information should we take away from Jorge Martín's statements before the Qatar Grand Prix?
- Jorge Martín will be present at the Losail circuit to try to compete in the entire Grand Prix.
- Five more days of recovery could allow him to score a few points that would prevent Marc Márquez from being crowned champion.
- He will not take all the risks if he sees that his condition does not allow him to take part in both races.
