Qatar was supposed to be the Grand Prix of all geopolitical concerns. It became the Grand Prix of all sporting tensions. Marc Marquez won an electrifying sprint, eliminated Marco Bezzecchi from the title race after a controversial collision, and earned his first match point for Sunday. Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia left the circuit on a stretcher after a terrifying crash.
A day that leaves an impression: with three Grand Prix remaining, no one seems willing to give anything away.
The three signals of the day:
- Marquez wins the Sprint and can become champion as early as Sunday, but only if Martin scores no points.
- Bezzecchi crashes after contact with Marquez: the stewards acknowledge a racing incident, without penalty.
- Bagnaia was the victim of a violent accident caused by Aldeguer, with several fractures to the toes of his right foot reported.
Marquez–Bezzecchi: a door opened, then closed again
It all started on the fourth lap of the Sprint , after an initial aborted start. Marquez made a mistake under braking for turn 1 and ran wide. Bezzecchi , who had started from pole position, immediately seized the opportunity and dived down the inside.
But Marquez is heading back towards the inside. The two bikes touch. The Spaniard almost falls, manages to stay upright, while the Italian ends up on the ground. The stewards review the incident and decide not to penalize.
A legally defensible decision, but one that certainly won't be unanimously accepted. Especially within Aprilia 's ranks.
Marquez opened the door with his mistake. He knew that an opponent as combative as Bezzecchi could exploit it. His return to the ideal racing line then caused the contact. This may explain why the stewards considered it a racing incident, although their precise reasoning is not known.
But the consequences were considerable: Bezzecchi retired and definitively lost his mathematical chances of winning the title. Marquez , on the other hand, continued on to victory.
At this stage of the season, number 93 gives the impression of wanting to finish this championship. And quickly.

Martin refuses to give up: the Marquez title may have to wait a little longer
Marquez takes the win ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio , second by 0.862 seconds, and Jorge Martin , third despite his fractured right wrist. The Aprilia rider puts in a remarkable performance after starting eleventh. He even manages to briefly overtake Marquez before succumbing to the Ducati 's pace.
This third place keeps the pressure on. Marquez now has a 49-point lead over Martin . To clinch the title on Sunday, he will need to win the Grand Prix and see his rival finish outside the points.
The scenario remains challenging. And what about Bezzecchi ? He no longer has a title to defend, but certainly a sporting victory to seek. Knowing his fighting spirit, it's hard to imagine he'll pass up the opportunity to attack Marquez if it arises on Sunday.
The duel could be even more tense, precisely because the stakes for the two men are no longer the same.
Bagnaia: Saturday turns into a nightmare
Even before the Marquez-Bezzecchi duel , the Sprint had descended into turmoil. At the first start, Fermin Aldeguer missed his braking point while attempting to overtake Pedro Acosta and violently collided with Bagnaia.
The official Ducati rider is thrown to the ground. Red flag, medical intervention, stretcher evacuation. Aldeguer receives a double long-lap penalty. According to the latest information, Bagnaia has fractures of the fourth and fifth toes of his right foot. The fracture of the fourth toe is reportedly multiple and displaced, requiring surgery. Another blow for a rider who finally seemed to be regaining his competitive edge at Losail.

What we will be watching for tomorrow:
- Marquez's first championship opportunity: victory imperative and no points for Martin.
- Bezzecchi's reaction after a collision that definitively extinguished his title hopes.
- Medical details on Bagnaia and the consequences of his operation on the end of his season.
And now? The Sprint has produced a winner, but certainly hasn't calmed the paddock. Marquez is closing in on the title, Martin refuses to give up, and Bezzecchi now has another reason to want to shine. On Sunday, Marquez can become MotoGP champion . But after this Saturday, no one can guarantee that the road to the checkered flag will be peaceful…
