Brno is a story that ends in Grand Prix while that of Rio will never have started in MotoGP. One was a historic milestone in the calendar, whereas in Brazil, it is just a vague project hanging by a thread. In both cases, we must turn the page. For the Czech Republic, it’s still a shame…

To Brno, we knew his fate was sealed for this year since the publication of the calendar of the 2021 World Championship season MotoGP. The Czech Republic Grand Prix spot was no more. In the preliminary calendar, its traditional date first appeared without confirming the circuit, but in the latest update there was no trace.

The reason was the communication resurfacing required following pilot complaints, as well as the need to widen some loopholes. So many works not scheduled for 2021. But we hoped that everything would return to order with time.

It will not be so. In the press release for the 2021 season calendar for the Brno track, we can read that if the “traditional events” will be ensured, we also discover that the management of the Automotodrom Brno has decided not to organize world championships at the future. The return is therefore excluded in the calendar MotoGP or that of World Superbike, at least in the medium term.

« We have many years of experience in organizing global competitions and we know the economics of this business very well. No sporting or cultural events of global significance is not economically possible to organize without adequate public support“, justified Ivana Ulmanová, CEO of Automotodrom Brno.

Brno was an institution after Assen

This marks the farewell of Brno, the second circuit with the most World Cup races held, with 168. Only Assen is ahead with 271 events. Brno was also the second with the most years on the calendar (51), with a presence from 1965 to 1982, from 1987 to 1991 and from 1993 to 2020. The drivers who have won the most are the Italians Giacomo Agostini, Max Biaggi et Valentino Rossi, all with seven victories.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, the battle between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is over. The Rio de Janeiro route will never see the light of day. Eduardo Cavaliere, environmental secretary of the town hall of Rio, said on his social networks that Mayor Eduardo Paes had ordered him to end the procedures to obtain environmental licenses to build in the Camboatá forest, at the northern end of the metropolis. “ We have officially abandoned the construction of the Rio international track“, said Eduardo Cavaliere.

Brno won't have this show for a while...
