For FP1 of the eleventh of its 22 rounds, the world championship MotoGP returns to Germany, and the modern version of the Sachsenring circuit for the 28th time, the latter being one of the six circuits on the current calendar which are run counter-clockwise, along with Aragon, Austin, Balaton Park, Phillip Island and Valencia!
To the statement "A circuit that is run in a counter-clockwise direction"We immediately think of Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team), and rightly so, since the reigning world champion has already won there nine times in MotoGP. Although still waiting to regain his peak physical condition, number 93 is nevertheless more confident than he was at Assen. A victory therefore doesn't seem impossible for the first rider who won't be able to lead the championship before the summer break…
In front are indeed four contenders separated by only 25 points, so the hierarchy could be completely different before the halfway point of the season.
George Martin (Aprilia Racing) is leading the championship for the first time since winning the world title in 2024. Winner of the 2023 German Grand Prix and replaced last year by Lorenzo Savadori"He wants to maintain his advantage over his teammate" Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) before going on summer vacation.
Perhaps feeling the pressure, the Italian suffered a violent crash at Assen, but despite the bruises, he will be present this weekend. 7 points The two official Noale drivers are separated, so everything is still to play for at the top of the championship.
Lurking behind the two drivers in black, and still in contention for the championship lead, is Fabio DiGiannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), first Ducati representative.
The Italian continues to string together good results and take advantage of opportunities when his rivals aren't scoring big points. Last year in Germany, he was in contention for a podium finish before crashing out, just like Bezzecchi.
To this day, he remains the fastest man on the German track…
Another contender: the brand new MotoGP winner, Ai Ogura (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team). At 25 points The Japanese driver shone at Assen, but the Sachsenring presents a completely different challenge: no Japanese driver has ever won two consecutive Grands Prix, and that makes 51 years that a Japanese player has not held the top spot in the world championship. The most spectacular sport on the planet could still offer us a huge surprise at the halfway point of the season… but it would truly be a huge surprise!
Raúl Fernández (SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team) is coming off a Sprint victory and a second-place finish at the Assen Grand Prix, which propels them to 6th rank of the championship, to 55 points de Martín. After his best weekend of the 2026 season, the Spaniard arrives full of confidence!
Come next Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who has just returned from carpal tunnel surgery, and Francis Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), which won the German Grand Prix in 2024, Both forced to abandon the race on Sunday in Holland: a taste of revenge is on the agenda…
Further, much further, Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) occupies 9th place in the championship after his courageous fifth place in the Netherlands, while his teammate Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP), tenth in the standings, is out after his crash at Assen.
The two men are thus leading a second group also composed of
Luca marini (Honda HRC Castrol), Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3) Brad Binder
(Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), fabio quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), Diogo Moreira (Pro Honda LCR) and
Franco Morbidely
(Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), to name only the top 16, with Moreira and Morbidelli tied on points.

That's a quick overview of the situation. To write this eleventh chapter of the 2026 MotoGP season, the 15-meter track will have to be covered 3671 times during Saturday's Sprint and 30 laps completed on Sunday.
To tackle the challenging German round and its highly unusual course, which presents unique challenges, the teams of Michelin Motorsports have concocted a tailor-made allocation, with three asymmetrical specifications (Soft, Medium, Hard) for the front wheel, and two (Soft, Medium) also asymmetrical for the rear.
Piero Taramasso, Michelin Motorsport's two-wheeled competition manager: "The Sachsenring is undoubtedly one of the most demanding circuits of the season in terms of tires. Beyond the fact that the drivers race counter-clockwise, it is above all the configuration of the track that constitutes a real challenge.
Between turns 4 and 10, the bikes take a series of left-hand corners. This gives the right side of the tire time to cool down before tackling turn 11, a long, downhill right-hander that puts sudden stress on the tire. It's a very tricky section, where only tires specifically developed for this type of stress can deliver the expected performance. Thanks to our experience on this circuit, we've selected a perfectly suited tire package. It's in these kinds of situations that riders need confidence the most, and we'll be there to provide them with the right tire at the right time.

Conversely, the circuit does not present any particular difficulties for Brembowhich ranks it 3 on a scale of 1 to 6. The most demanding corner at the Sachsenring for the braking system is the first corner after the finish line. MotoGP bikes decelerate from 297 km/h to 70 km/h in 5,4 seconds – one of the longest braking phases of the season – during which they cover 240 meters. During this braking maneuver, the riders exert a force of 5,2 kg on the brake lever. The deceleration reaches 1,5 g, the Brembo brake fluid pressure climbs to 11,2 bar, while the temperature of the carbon discs reaches 670 °C.

Among the current full-time MotoGP riders, the winners of previous editions are: Marc Marquez (9 victories: 2013 to 2019, 2021 and 2025), fabio quartararo (2022) George Martin (2023) et Francesco Bagnaia (2024)..
9 current riders have reached the podium in MotoGP, Marc Marquez (9) Maverick Vinales (2) fabio quartararo (2) Johann zarco (2) Francesco Bagnaia (2) Miguel Oliveira (1) Jack Miller (1) Alex Marquez (1) and George Martin (1).
4 drivers have already taken pole position: M. Marquez (8) Francesco Bagnaia (2) Johann zarco (1) et George Martin (1).
The records are set in 1'19.071 (Fabio Di Giannantonio) since 2025, and 306,8 km/h for the speed per Peter Acosta since 2024.
At the last edition in 2025, Marc Marquez won the GP in front of Alex Marquez etFrancis Bagnaia, while the Sprint podium was made up of Marc Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi et Fabio Quartararo.
For the eleventh round of a 22-round season, we'll need to expect much cooler weather than the heatwave currently gripping France…

While we wait to find out more, as the 22 drivers prepare under skies with air temperatures of 18°C and track temperatures of 27°C for this first 45-minute free practice session, let's enjoy these few moments of live coverage thanks to the official website. MotoGP.com :
