On Saturday, Marco Bezzecchi crashed out of the Qatar Sprint, the victim of a collision with Marc Marquez. On Sunday, he left Losail victorious… and still a contender for the world title! The turnaround is spectacular. But behind this sporting revenge lies a mathematical reality far less favorable to the Italian: Marquez missed his first match point, without truly jeopardizing his chances of winning the championship.
Bezzecchi responds on the track
In the wake of a Sprint that had angered the Aprilia garage, Bezzecchi didn't need any controversy to get his revenge. Starting from pole position, the Italian led the Grand Prix from start to finish, setting a pace that no one could match.
Marquez did manage to climb back up to second place, notably overtaking Raul Fernandez in the final laps. But the Aprilia had already pulled away. At the finish, Bezzecchi took the win, 3,083 seconds ahead of the Ducati. Fernandez completed the podium ahead of Ai Ogura.
The rider who was thought to be out of contention after his crash on Saturday remains, against all odds, mathematically alive. And he owes this to a display of speed, not to a mistake by Marquez.
Three candidates, including the return of Bezzecchi, but only one true master of the game
There are two Grand Prix remaining, in Portugal and Valencia, i.e. 74 Maximum points to be distributed between the Sprints and the main races. Bezzecchi accuse précisément 74 points behind. To have any hope of winning the title, he must therefore win the last four races and see Marquez fail to score any more points..
Even this extreme scenario wouldn't automatically guarantee him the title: a tiebreaker would still be required based on the regulations in case of a stalemate. Jorge Martin has a slightly better chance. Despite his broken right wrist, his seventh-place finish in Qatar keeps him in contention. Pedro Acosta, on the other hand, is definitively out of the running.

Marquez lost an opportunity, not control
Marquez did not win the race. Martin scored points. The conditions for his immediate title win were therefore not met. However, his second-place finish earned him 20 points and further strengthened his position in the championship. The Ducati rider now has a 60-point lead over Martin.
He only needs to score 14 more points, even if Martin has a perfect race, to secure the title. Better still: a victory in the Portimão Sprint would be enough to crown him on Saturday, regardless of his rivals' results.
Davide Tardozzi 's cautious strategy makes perfect sense here. Marquez didn't need to chase Bezzecchi at any cost. His main objective was to avoid the mistake that would have truly reignited the championship.
Aprilia wins in Qatar, Ducati moves closer to the title
The result nevertheless confirms an interesting trend. Bezzecchi dominated the Grand Prix, Martin held on despite his injury, and Fernandez placed a third Aprilia on the podium.
Aprilia has a strong sporting case for the last two rounds. But converting this competitiveness into a world title would require an almost total collapse from Marquez.
So, what do we remember?
- Bezzecchi remains mathematically in contention, with a 74-point deficit and 74 points still available.
- Martin remains the main pursuer, 60 points behind Marquez.
- Marquez peut être sacré dès le Sprint portugais, s’il le remporte.
On Saturday, Bezzecchi lost his Sprint race in controversy. On Sunday, he won his Grand Prix decisively. He salvaged his title hopes. But to turn this reprieve into a world championship, he will now have to win absolutely everything… and hope that Marquez loses absolutely everything.
