With a time of 1'30.480, Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) won the first day of the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino e Riviera di Rimini, in a closely contested afternoon in the weekly MotoGP race for the top 10 on Friday.
Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) finished second on home turf and that of the Noale factory, with a gap of 0,147 seconds, while Franco Morbidely gave Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team a top-three finish ahead of Saturday's race at Misano.
The first half of the session was very close at the front, with a familiar number 93 leading the way. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) was less than a tenth behind, with Bezzecchi in P3 just before entering the final 30 minutes of practice.
The drivers who were in the all-important top 10 at the time of the time attack were Marc Marquez, Franco Morbidelli, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Marco Bezzecchi, Luca marini (Honda HRC Castrol), Peter Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP), Francis Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), fabio quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Raul fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team), separated by just 0,461 seconds. The top 17 were grouped within 0,733 seconds, which promised an intense battle for automatic qualification to Q2…
With 15 minutes left, the improvements started to flow. Pecco moved up to 5th place before the No. 63 set the fastest time by more than two tenths, but that quickly changed when Marc Marquez pushed the limits by a further three tenths with a time of 1'30.480. Marco Bezzecchi then moved up to second place, 0,163 seconds behind Marc Marquez, while the reigning world champion George Martin (Aprilia Racing) briefly made it into the top 10 before his lap was cancelled.
The best timeAlex Marquez was enough for him to move up to fourth with nine minutes remaining, but Joan mir (Honda HRC Castrol) then slipped into that position with a time of 1'30.819, 0,339 seconds off Marquez's pace.
Marco Bezzecchi then accelerated to finish 0,147 seconds behind Marc Marquez, and just behind, his teammate George Martin took advantage of a good wake to climb to 6th place, relegating fabio quartararo outside the top 10 with less than four minutes remaining.
Yellow flags were raised after the crashes.Augusto Fernandez (Yamaha Factory Racing Team) at turn 2, then from Joan mir at turn 9, before Raul fernandez did not fall at turn 15. The latter's fall led to the cancellation of the laps, including for Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3).
Finally, Luca marini had a very good lap and the Italian managed to hold on until the finish line to take 7th place.
As always, Q1 will be a major event, Fabio Quartararo et Johann zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) were the fastest outside the top 10, but only by a few thousandths of a second. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Maverick Vinales (Red Bull KTM Tech3).
